Whether you’re a local, or here on vacation, there’s nothing like finding a spot to sit back and relax as a day in the beautiful Shuswap comes to an end. Here are three places to watch that happen.

1. SUNNYBRAE PARK

Sunnybrae Park is a fantastic spot for some swimming, sunbathing, and all around family fun. There’s a new playground for the kids, washrooms, and loads of parking. The park has undergone some improvements recently, so it’s looking especially pretty; there are new trees, grass to lounge around on (picnic, anyone?) and the pebble beach just below is what you’d expect along the shores of the Shuswap.

For those wanting to stretch their legs, a nature trail can be found on the far side of the parking lot, which is also where you’ll find the dog-friendly beach, more picnic tables and an outhouse!

The shoreline is a staple sunset destination for us local landscape photographers — why? Because there’s a great view of Salmon Arm & Mt. Ida, and the sunsets there can range anywhere from subtle to electrifying.

2. SICAMOUS LOOKOUT

The Sicamous Lookout offers panoramic views of Shuswap Lake, the town of Sicamous, and even Mara Lake.

The wooden ramp is a hang glider’s ramp that’s been used for a very long time but has been restored more than once throughout the years. It’s still used today! With that in mind, the ramp is steep, so be careful and watch your step.

The road up to the ramp is gravel, but car-friendly.* There’s no designated parking, so just safely pull over on a wider spot in the road and watch out for logging trucks, who have the right of way.

* Please use the road at your own discretion!

3. MARINE PEACE PARK

This list wouldn’t be complete without a mention of the 440’ Salmon Arm Wharf. This park has all the amenities; ample parking, a boat launch, picnic tables galore, trails, washrooms, and a concession stand at the end of the wharf during high season. The landscaping in this park is beautiful. There’s plenty of space to throw a frisbee, and let the kids run around. A covered stage hosts the popular ‘Wednesday at the Wharf’ concerts, held during the summer months.

It’s a great place to wind down after a day of play in the Shuswap. Just make sure to bring mosquito repellant for when it cools off; the marshes surrounding the area provide a perfect habitat for a variety of birds & other wildlife, but that also means the mosquitos are happy to live there as well.

Your view during sunset will be of Shuswap Lake, featuring Bastion Mountain, or to the left, Fly Hills. If you walk down the wharf and look back, you’ll be treated to another angle; Mt. Ida being lit up by the last rays of the sun.

There are so many beautiful places here that it’s hard to choose, but if you’re just getting to know the area, these three are a great start to your adventure in the Shuswap!
